In the wisdom of Ifá, all elements of nature carry spiritual essence and purpose. Nothing exists without meaning, and every being, from the tallest Iroko tree to the tiniest insect, has a role in maintaining cosmic balance. Among these often-overlooked yet powerful forces of nature is the humble earthworm, a silent awo (Ekòló) that toils beneath our feet, nurturing both the land and the spiritual harmony of existence.

Earthworms: The Hidden Olórùn of the Soil.

In Ifá, the earth (Ìlé) is not just a physical entity but a divine force, often personified as Onile, the spirit of the land. Just as Olórún governs the heavens and Olókun commands the depths of the waters, Onílé nurtures all life on land. Earthworms serve as the unseen priests (awo) of Onílé, constantly working to transform and purify the soil, ensuring the land remains fertile and balanced. Their presence is a divine blessing, a manifestation of Onílé's continuous cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

The Earthworm as an Agent of Ọ̀rúnmìlà’s Wisdom.

Ọ̀rúnmìlà, the Òrìsà of Enlightenment, teaches us that the greatest mysteries are often hidden in plain sight. Earthworms embody this sacred principle. Though they work in silence and obscurity, their impact is profound. By processing over 20 tons of soil per acre each year, they create vital pathways for oxygen and water to flow into the ground. This mirrors the way Ọ̀rúnmìlà’s wisdom penetrates all aspects of existence, unseen yet essential for harmony and growth.

Their castings, five times more nutrient-rich than ordinary topsoil, represent the transformation of the old into the new—a fundamental concept in Ifá. Just as Ọ̀rúnmìlà teaches that every challenge carries the seed of renewal, the earthworm transforms decayed matter into sustenance, ensuring that the land remains abundant for generations to come.

Earthworms and the Balance of Aye (Earthly Existence)

In Ifá, Aye (the physical world) must remain in alignment with Orun (the spiritual realm). When the land is healthy, humanity thrives, and the connection between the seen and unseen remains strong. Earthworms facilitate this balance by enhancing soil structure, supporting microbial life, and improving both water retention and drainage. Their presence strengthens Onílé’s ability to nourish crops, trees, and all beings that depend on the earth for survival.

Moreover, earthworms contribute to carbon storage, reducing excess carbon in the atmosphere and mitigating climate imbalance. This is a testament to their role as silent custodians of equilibrium, ensuring that the land remains a sanctuary for all forms of life.

Protecting the Awo Beneath Our Feet

In the sacred verses of Ifá, humanity is entrusted with the responsibility of stewardship over nature. As we seek blessings from the Orisha and ancestors, we must also honor and protect those who sustain us, including the unseen forces beneath our feet.

To ensure that earthworms continue their divine work, we must:

Add Organic Matter: Just as we offer sacrifices to maintain balance, we must feed the soil with natural compost and organic materials, ensuring earthworms have the nourishment they need.

Minimize Soil Disturbance: Frequent plowing and excessive digging disrupt their work. Instead, we should adopt gentle agricultural practices that preserve their sacred labor.

Avoid Synthetic Chemicals: Pesticides and chemical fertilizers poison the land, weakening Onílé and killing the earthworms that sustain its fertility.

Keep the Soil Moist, Not Soggy: Water is a sacred element, and maintaining the right moisture balance ensures that earthworms can breathe and continue their work without drowning.

Honoring the Sacred Labor of the Earthworm

Ifá teaches that every being has a role in the divine order. Earthworms, though small and hidden, are powerful custodians of Onílé’s bounty. Just as we honor the Orisha with rituals and offerings, we must also respect the natural forces that uphold life itself. By protecting earthworms and the soil they nurture, we align ourselves with Ọ̀rúnmìlà’s wisdom, ensuring that Aye remains a place of balance, abundance, and spiritual harmony.

For every human on Earth, there are 1.5 million earthworms working tirelessly beneath our feet. Let us honor them, for in doing so, we honor the divine order itself.
